According to the Vatican’s chief physician, Pope Francis passed away on Monday after irreparable heart failure and a brain stroke. Francis was eighty-eight.
According to a statement issued by the Vatican’s health department chief, Dr. Andrea Arcangeli, the stroke caused a coma and “irreversible cardiocirculatory collapse,” as reported by many news agencies.

Francis passed away in the Vatican’s Casa Santa Marta residence on Monday at 7:35 a.m.
Francis had a history of bilateral pneumonia, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and bouts of respiratory insufficiency, according to a statement from Arcangeli.
Francis just had double pneumonia and was hospitalized for over a month. On Easter Sunday, however, he came out of his recuperation to bless the throngs in St. Peter’s Square and provide a surprise popemobile trip across the plaza.
Before he passed away, it was his final public appearance.
