According to Steve Witkoff, the proposal is based on a “simplistic” belief that the UK prime minister and other European leaders believe “we all have to be like Winston Churchill.”

In an interview with pro-Trump journalist Tucker Carlson, Witkoff complimented Vladimir Putin, claiming he “liked” the Russian President.

According to Steve Witkoff, the proposal is based on a “simplistic” belief that the UK prime minister and other European leaders believe “we all have to be like Winston Churchill.”

Witkoff expressed admiration for Russian President Vladimir Putin during an interview with pro-Trump journalist Tucker Carlson, stating that he “liked” him.

I don’t regard Putin as a bad guy,” he was saying. “He’s super smart.”
Witkoff, who met Putin ten days earlier, described the Russian president as “gracious” and “straight up” with him. Putin also informed him that he had prayed for Trump during an assassination attempt last year. He also said that Putin commissioned a painting of the US president as a present, and Trump was “clearly moved” by it.

  • During the interview, Witkoff reiterated many Russian points, including the notion that Ukraine was “a false country” and wondered when the world would recognize seized Ukrainian land as Russian.
  • Witkoff is in charge of the US cease-fire discussions with both Russia and Ukraine, but he was unable to identify the five Ukrainian areas that have been seized or partly controlled by Russian military.
  • He elaborated: “The largest issue in that conflict are these so-called four regions, Donbas, Crimea, you know the names and there are two others.”
  • The five regions (or oblasts) are Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Kherson, and Crimea. Donbas is an industrial area in the east that comprises most of Luhansk and Donetsk.

Witkoff made various statements that are either false or disputed:

He claimed that Ukrainian soldiers in Kursk were encircled, which was disputed by the Ukrainian government and not supported by any open-source information.

He said that the four partly occupied areas of Ukraine had “referendums in which the overwhelming majority of the people indicated that they want to be under Russian rule.” Only certain occupied areas of Ukraine held referendums at various periods, and the technique and results were widely rejected and questioned.
He stated the four partly occupied oblasts spoke Russian. There are numerous Russian-speaking regions in Ukraine, but this has never signaled support for Russia.

Ahead of that, Ukrainian officials said that Russia conducted drone assaults on Kyiv overnight, killing three people, including a five-year-old kid.

Officials said that eight persons were hurt.

Russia also blasted the southern city of Zaporizhzhia on Friday, killing a family of three.

Meanwhile, Russia’s defense ministry stated on Sunday that it has shot down 59 Ukrainian drones in various southern areas as well as Crimea, which Russia unlawfully invaded in 2014.

During his interview, Witkoff reiterated key Kremlin talking points on the root cause of Russia’s full-scale invasion.

He said that it was “true” from the Russian standpoint that the partly seized areas were now part of Russia: “The elephant in the room is, there are constitutional concerns inside Ukraine as to what they may yield in terms of territory. The Russians de facto rule these areas. The issue is whether the world will recognize that they are Russian lands.

He said further: “There’s a sensibility in Russia that Ukraine is just a false country, that they just patched together in this sort of mosaic, these regions, and that’s what is the root cause, in my opinion, of this war, that Russia regards those five regions as rightfully theirs since World War Two, and that’s something nobody wants to talk about.”

Putin has frequently said that the “root causes” of his invasion were Russia’s perceived danger from an expanding NATO and Ukraine’s very existence as an independent nation.

They don’t need to integrate Ukraine… They’ve recaptured these five territories. They have Crimea, and they have achieved their goal. So, why do they need more?”

When asked about Keir Starmer’s intentions to form a “coalition of the willing” to give military security assurances for a post-war Ukraine, Witkoff said: “I believe it’s a mix of posture and pose, as well as being basic. There is this idea that we all have to be like [British wartime Prime Minister] Winston Churchill. Russians are preparing to march over Europe. That is outrageous, by the way. We now have something called Nato, which did not exist during World War II.”

He stated a truce in the Black Sea will be “implemented over the next week or so” and “we are not far away” from a complete 30-day ceasefire.

He also described how Trump intended to cooperate with Russia after ties had been normalized. “Who doesn’t want to have a world where Russia and the US are doing collaboratively good things together, thinking about how to integrate their energy polices in the Arctic, share sea lines maybe, send LNG gas into Europe together, maybe collaborate on AI together?”
