Five feared deaths when a fire destroyed Kubwa market

Five people were feared to die Friday night when fire burned down part of Abuja’s popular ultra-modern Kubwa Market.

Although the identity of the deceased was not immediately known, an ambulance worker at the scene announced that at least two other burns of varying degrees had been sustained.

While the actual cause of the fire, which broke out minutes before 8 p.m., could not be determined immediately, according to traders it was an explosion of pounded kerosene.

At 8:45 p.m., firefighters were still fighting to contain hell.
